Chicago Musician and Songwriter Lavelle Lacy Passes
GOSPELflava joins others around the country celebrating the life while mourning the passing of Lavelle Lacy. An outstanding musician and songwriter, Lavelle was a huge part of the Chicago Gospel Sound in the 70s, 80s and 90s, writing the hits for choirs and accompanying groups and soloists for more than 4 decades, Lavelle wrote for some of Gospel music’s best and brightest. Among his many musical treasures are
I Won’t Forget, Jesus Is Mine, So Glad I’m Saved – Dr. Charles G. Hayes and the Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer Choir
I Found Jesus (and I’m Glad) – Chicago Mass Choir/Reverend Maceo Woods and the Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir
He Keeps on Blessing Me – Ricky Dillard and New G
Call Him Up – Chicago Mass Choir
A larger than life fellow with personality to match, Lavelle was known for his comedic banter, his generosity and hospitality. His “brother’s keeper mentality” would lead to the organization of the Chicago Musician’s Coalition, a monthly fellowship for musicians and Gospel music personell. Musicians would travel from across the country for fellowship. In 2016,,Lavelle joined Elsa Harris, Bryant Jones, Eric Thomas, Richard Gibbs, Terry Moore and Curtis Fondren producing the Sirens Records’ Lift Me Up disc celebrating Chicago Gospel musicians. Funeral arrangements are pending.
