Catching Up With Geoffrey Golden
GOSPELflava had a moment to catch up with BET Sunday Best Season 7 winner and recent Morehouse College graduate Geoffrey Golden as he prepares for his live recording taking place on June 30th in Detroit, Michigan. Here’s what he had to say:
GOSPELflava: Geoffrey, bring us up to speed on what you’ve been doing since your Sunday Best win.
Geoffrey Golden: The Lord has been gracious to us. Since the win on Sunday Best Season 7, I have travelled around the country and overseas to sing and preach the Gospel. At the time, I was a junior at Morehouse. Since then, I graduated (in 2016) and moved back home to Cleveland. I released my debut album Kingdom Live in 2015 with Kirk Franklin’s Fo Yo Soul Recordings/RCA Inspiration so its definitely been a good ride.
GOSPELflava: You’re teaming up with your brothers to produce your next album. Tell us how it was to work with them?
Geoffrey Golden: You know, for my two older brothers and I, music is in our blood. Our Dad has been pastoring for 27 years and the whole time my mom has been right there, serving in music ministry as organist, pianist, choir director; she is the national minister of music for our church’s organization, The Church of Christ Holiness USA. If we weren’t singing in church, we were going to choir rehearsal with the local community choir, the Greater Cleveland Choral Chapter. That has been our life, that’s how we came up. Many families are united around sports and other professions. But music has been our blessing Our family’s tie has been God and music. Going from our church in Cleveland to doing music at the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, where my brother Reggie is the music director for the Youth and Young Adult Department, its been a great experience. When I was at Morehouse, my older brother Kevin who lives in Atlanta, serves as the music director at Higher Calling Ministries Church so I got to lead worship and play piano during my college years. We have been blessed to do ministry together, but this is a new level of collaboration, we had things where two of us have been working together but its been pretty rare that the three of us would get together to work on a big project. I am excited about this project. We are calling this In This Room, Live in Detroit. This is the first time that all three of us are involved and it is going to be something incredible.
GOSPELflava: Tell us about your guests for the Live Recording.
Geoffrey Golden: I’m so excited that my brother, Joshua Rogers, the season 5 winner of Sunday best will be joining us. It was so interesting and crazy how God just worked things out. I found out that Josh had moved to Detroit several months ago. As the Lord was leading us to do the recording in Detroit, we began looking at venues and we reached out to Pastor Welton Smith of New Life Family Church, I ministered there before, so we set up a meeting after service. I walked in service (I was late) and someone taps me and said turn around and it was Josh, he had joined the church and became a part of the ministry. Only God could have planned that. This is the first time that we will actually sing together. There was the time where all 7 winners each sang for the opening of Season 8, but this is the first time that we get to sing together. The song that we are doing is an old song written by V Michael McKay that we get a chance to cover and I am excited about getting to sign with him He is a phenomenal vocalist and incredibly anointed and an awesome Guy and I’m looking forward to doing a song with him.
Then, my sister Rolanda Carter will be opening up for the recording. I am excited to say she is the first artist under the Golden Brothers, we have kinda grown up with her, went to high school with her and we have seen how God has blossomed her, she has such an awesome gift. I think of her gift as Gospel meets Lauryn Hill meets Jazz. We are excited about Detroit being exposed and getting a chance to hear her gift
