Iconic Radio Personality Edna Tatum Passes
On the heels of the closing of the GMWA Board Meeting in Los Angeles comes word of the passing of one of Gospel music’s distinctive voices, the legendary Edna Tatum has passed away after enduring some health challenges. A tribute service honoring her for her contributions to Gospel music was held this past January.
Known as the “Voice” of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Edna Tatum found great joy as a gospel radio announcer in Los Angeles. She caught the attention of Reverend James Cleveland and introduced him and the Southern California Community Choir on several occasions including the Live at Carnegie Hall LP as well as Rev Cleveland’s last recording with SCCC, Having Church . In 1996, she was joined by Billy Preston for the compilation of a words and music disc. Her voice can also be heard on projects from Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers, Bishop Walter Hawkins and the Love Center Choir’s 25th Anniversary Celebration and Rev. Daryl Coley.
