RECAP: Urban Soul Cafe (2009)
Since the Stellar Awards have been hosted in Nashville, TN, the eyes and ears of the gospel community have gathered to enjoy some of gospel's finest artists at the Urban Soul Café.
On both January 15 and 16, 2009, B.B. King's Blues Café played host to the event where some 40 artists converged, sharing their gift with the world. The night showcased several of the industry's brightest new artists including Mali Music, The Murrills, Frontlynaz, D. Montrell, and Gospel Dream finalist J-S.O.U.L.
Several standout performances from new talent included the neo-soul stylings of Rae Ellis and the urban rock presentation of Jai. DJ Will, Mr. E, and DJ Maestro 1 kept the party rockin' with incredible musical mixes that excited the audience and artists alike.
The urban genre was well represented with performances from Mr. Del, J.R., Flame, and Da' T.R.U.T.H., who brought along a surprise guest, Kirk Franklin. Franklin hosted a special Zomba Label showcase at Urban Soul Café, which featured Sunday Best winner Crystal Aikin, Shari Addison, and 21:03. Likewise, the Universal Music Group also had a showcase which featured Holy Boy, New Artist of the Year Jessica Greene, and Isaiah D. Thomas and Elements of Praise.
Other performances over the two day period came from Ted Winn, Lowell Pye, LeJuene Thompson, Sean Simmonds, Damita Haddon, Suzy Rock, and Christopher.
The event was highlighted by a special Legends Award given to Jacky Clark-Chisholm and featured a special musical dedication from her daughter. Angel Chisholm.
Other guests spotted over the two night period included Daryl Coley, George Huff, SWV, Maurette Brown Clark, Sharon Riley, DeWayne Woods, Deitrick Haddon, and a host of others.
The event, organized by Rare Entertainment, was hosted by Carlos Hale and co-hosted by Sheilah Belle and GOSPELflava.com's Gerard Bonner.
