RECAP: EMI Gospel Showcase at the 23rd Annual Stellar Awards (2008)
Dave & Buster's was a hot spot for the Stellar Awards weekend. The EMI Gospel Showcase set up shop in the venue, and the Nashville-based label took time to highlight their 2008 roster and make a special tribute to famed producer Donald Lawrence.
Hosted by the label's Ken Cook and last year's Stellar wunderkind Myron Butler, the morning began with Butler introducing his new single "Unrestrained".
New artists Da'Quela and LaRue Howard each blessed the crowd with tracks from their forthcoming albums. Jason Champion set the crowd ablaze with awe-inspiring tracks from his solo release, due to hit stores in May 2008.
The remaining portion of the morning's festivities were devoted to honoring Donald Lawrence for his incredible achievement of penning or producing the top four songs in Gospel radio for 2007, as reported by Billboard Magazine. Billboard was in the house, and presented Lawrence with an official award commemorating the event.
The industry came out in droves to honor Lawrence. Artists present including Tye Tribbett, Kirk Franklin, The Clark Sisters, Men of Standard, and Richard Smallwood, were a sampling of the many who came to express their appreciation to Lawrence during the course of the event.
Additional performances came from Vanessa Bell Armstrong, who killed the house with "Peace Be Still", while protégé DeWayne Woods performed "Let Go".
The final performance of the session came from Sheri Jones-Moffett, who, backed by several of the Tri-City Singers, brought the house down with "Encourage Yourself".
Relive this historic session with a pictorial review of the event.
