Happy Holidays from Vickie Winans Totalling 15 cuts, Winans puts her distinctive touch to several seasonal classics, and also delivers several stunning originals, making for a highly listenable disc. The lead single, "Special Day", is a mid-tempo beacon with Fred Jerkins producing. Winans gives God praise for his love and care, wrapping her vocals around a multi-layered track while explaining that with Him, everyday is a holiday. "Jingle Bells" is a musical potpourri, with a mix of latin, jazz scat, contemporary grooves (featuring Tim Bowman II) and some intriguing melodic motifs (including a brief James Bond 007 moment). On "Joy to The World", son Marvin Winans Jr. takes the mic, taking some phrasing liberties as chunky percussion fills out the soundscape. Denise Tichenor returns to the scene on "O Holy Night", and Winans herself digs into "Mary Did You Know", perhaps one of the most wonderfully poignant Christmas songs out there. Son Mario Winans and Tina Brooks add backing vocals. Other choice cuts on this keeper are a reappearance of the Brent Jones-penned "The Rainbow", and "Joyful Joyful", in which Winans covers the Sister Act version of Mervyn Warren's inspired contemporary setting of Beethoven's master melody. With so much to absorb, Happy Holidays from Vickie Winans will keep you singing well into December, and beyond.
