Urban Compositions
The Jerkins name tends to spark excitement in the ears of any urban music lover. Just as Rodney Jerkins (aka "Darkchild") has put his mark on the R&B market, Lee Jerkins has put his stamp on urban gospel and holy hip hop.
With that said, here comes the latest from Jerkins and RockSoul Entertainment titled "Urban Compositions". The 19-track project serves as the follow-up to the lethal compilation Rock of Ages, Vol. 1, and features a number of RockSoul artists.
The album brings back several tracks that were popular on the "Rock of Ages, Vol. 1" set, including "Faithful" from Michelle Bonilla, "Last Writes" from The Cross Movement, and "Wild Style" from Corey Red and Precise.
But there are a number of exciting new submissions worth noting. The prolific J-Silas makes his presence known with "1-2-3". The street savvy, gritty track highlights the emcee's skills and details the awesome ability and power of our Savior. J-Silas also adds his flava to "The Mansion", where he raps of God's protection that comes while battling the wiles of the enemy.
Also showing up on the project is Shai Linne, who laces it with the cut, "Issues". Most recently heard collaborating with Timothy Brindle on "The Last Awakening" (see album review), he continues to bring his in-your-face lyrics to the game, as he pulls no punches on the track. Touching issues from Saddam Hussein to gays in the choir, Shai Linne drops some serious knowledge on a track that has the feel of old-school hip-hop, complete with jazz and street influences. True hip-hop heads will rock this one for quite some time.
Adding to the urban vibe is Isaac J. Phillips who offers "Any Day Now" to the mix. This crooner's vocals rival the energy and texture of R&B hitmaker Usher and, with production credits to boot, Phillips is well on his way to making an impact. This track addresses the need to be prepared for the ensuing return of Christ.

"We’re hitting a vein. We know what the youth are asking for after going around the country with Cross Movement and Corey Red. When you deal with people on a grass roots level and they are responding, that means that there’s a market for it. Some of the older saints of God don’t want to allow this thing to happen, but it’s going to happen..."

Sistah Dee holds it down for the female emcees with "Leaving Norm". With a flow reminiscent of Rah Digga, Sistah Dee speaks of moving towards the power of a Christian life. Add a heavy East Coast vibe to this flow and you've got yet another winner on your hands.
The RockSoul crew (J-Silas, Shai Linne, Sistah Dee, and Michelle Bonilla) team up on "The Invite", another tight collaboration from the crew. Here, the head-bobbin' track showcases J-Silas and Shai Linne as emcees while Bonilla represents with a sweet hook. Not to be left out, Sistah Dee brings her flow to the mix as the crew invites everyone to try Christ and challenges all to dedicate themselves to Christ and not get lost merely in deeds.
In addition, the instrumentals to "1-2-3" and "Leaving Norm" are included on the project rounding out yet another hot compilation from the RockSoul family.
