The Lumzys
Satisfied
As one the rarest of group formats, female quartets are always notable, and perhaps none more so than The Lumzys.
Known for tearing the house to shreds and fronted by Chequita Lumzy, the New Jersey-based sister foursome is freshly signed to Marxan Records and debuts with their first album in a while, Satisfied.
Chequita drops sizzling vocals all over this album, with sisters Doris, Brenda and Delores upping the ante on backing drives. And it's not just the vocals that make this project so hot.
Consider that Paul Porter of The Christianaires guides the production of this 10-track studio gem. Then consider that instrumental kick comes from Al Willis (guitar), Aaron Lindsey (keyboards), Simeon Baker (bass), Lavell Bradford (organ), with lead by musical director Derrick Lee (piano). It's an explosive mix that won't let you sit down.
Album highlights? Chequita drops a mellow mid-tempo bomb on the opening cut, "Wait". Imploring all who will hear (and plenty will) to 'wait on Jesus', she finds a vocal pocket nestled into the harmony blends of her accompanying sisters and the band's continuing rhythmic flow.
The group ably tackles Darius Brooks' choir hit from his days with The Tommies, "Safe In His Arms". Complete with uncredited choir in the background, The Lumzys easily transition into their role in front of the mass voices.
True to form, several songs are written by The Lumzys, including the vertically-directed praise of "I Love You" from the pen of Chequita, and the powerfully bluesy "Prayer Will Win" from Emma Lumzy.
Other songs that impact are the old-time quartet special, "Redeemed" , from the pen of Derrick Lee, and the "A Change in Me" written by Paul Porter. The latter has the band laying back a little on the tempo while The Lumzys propel the piece with closely harmonized lines.
Satisfied? Absolutely.
