The Sensational Nightingales
Songs To Edify

Still going on strong as they close in on six decades of musical service, The Sensational Nightingales deliver Songs To Edify, a twelve-song set that relies on the group’s solid foundation and brings the rhythm to their supporters one more time.

CDThe Malaco release is marked by the return of Darrell Luster to the group (guitar and vocals), joining founding member Joseph “Jo Jo” Wallace, Horace Thompson and Larry Moore. The beauty of this group’s work is their reliance on the time honored quartet traditions — a mix of slow rides, faster drives and that familiar solo guitar arpeggio that serves to open so many of their songs.

The Gales revive their own classic “Going Where Jesus Is”, familiar to most with the late Julius Cheeks taking raspy lead. Wallace rearranges the swinging tune as the quartet brings it back to memory, with Thompson taking lead vocals. “My Life Is In God’s Hands” is also brought back.

On the slow side are the album opening “Lazarus” and the Dorothy Love Coates classic, “Separation Line”. Ballads such as “Give God The Honor” and “Satan You Lose Again” (with sermonette by Wallace mid-song and melodic elements reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” ) also stand out.

It’s hard to miss “I’m Blessed”, with it’s abrupt vocal rhythms, sharp swing, and tight harmonies. Penned by Luster, this song is set to be the album’s sure fire hit.

Give honor where honor is due. The Sensational Nightingales continue to come through.
