Introducing Joey & Veronica Woolfalk

Once in a while, an album reaches out and grabs you by surprise. Get ready to be shocked by Joey & Veronica Woolfalk's debut project, for it fits the bill.

Introducing Joey & Veronica Woolfalk is probably not the first time you've heard these artists, but more than likely, you've not been aware of their existence. Joey, as lead guitarist on nearly everyone's hit album, and his sister Veronica, on bass, and who has also made her presence felt recording with Dr. Charles Hayes and Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer Choir, have been on the scene for decades.

CDOn this, their first joint project, the siblings delve into a diverse range of material, from luscious praise balladry to rootsy, down home quartet stuff to make their father proud.

"Fill This Place" serves to open the album, a gorgeously rendered ballad of worship that moves gently amidst stacked harmonies. "Praise Him", the closing selection, is meditatively focused, with a stunning melody and some jazzy guitar ad libs from Greg Landfair to set it off.

In between those two cuts are a bevy of gems. "My Redeemer Lives" is a mid-tempo quartet number that features Joey on lead vocal, driving the cut from start to finish. "Change My Name" moves to a gentler groove, with testimony hammered into every phrase.

On the contemporary-styled "Simply Thanks", Joey and Veronica work together to deliver gratitude in a hook-filled composition. "Mama's Song" is, fittingly enough, a touching tribute to the duo's mother, recognizing her dedication and her guidance.

From start to finish this album satisfies, making it one of the year's sleepers, and keepers.
