Awakening Reeves has been afforded the opportunity to grace the stage with some of Gospel music's brightest stars (including Kirk Franklin, Hezekiah Walker, Deitrick Haddon, Andrae Crouch, and Dorinda Clark-Cole) and was recognized as Male Vocalist of the Year in 2009 at the Tyscot Records GEM Awards. The group's project, Awakening, encompasses a variety of musical styles that any avid gospel music lover will appreciate. The album opens with "Brand New", an up-tempo jazzy number, which quickly transitions into title track "Awakening" that shows Richard Smallwood and Kurt Carr influences. "Remind Me" reflects the trend of many gospel recordings right now, being a wonderful blend of contemporary Christian-styled lyrics and musical arrangements fused with bluesy chords and transitions. "I Choose You" features a simple musical arrangement, featuring only vocals and piano. It provides a perfect transition to "Lucky", which offers up contemporary sound. On "Matters of the Heart", the listener is grabbed by perfectly blended harmonies reminding all that God is where one's focus should be. The project ends with the thought-provoking "No New Thing", a song that written by Tyscot Records visionary Dr. Leonard Scott. In total, Awakening is engaging, fresh, and provides an appropriate mix of ballads and up-tempo songs, with musical production, lyrics, and vocal arrangements on point. The lyricism is clear and never gets lost in the musical arrangements. Brian Reeves & Heart After God have produced a wonderful debut project and are on the brink of making an indelible impression on the gospel music community.
