Live Recording Recap Longtime fans and friends were treated to a night of nostalgia and musical splendor as Elbertina (aka Twinkie) Clark recorded live at University Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC Saturday night May 4, 2002. The songstress who has written such Gospel hits as “Miracle” and “You Brought the Sunshine” and who has ministered historically with her siblings as part of the world famous Clark Sisters came out from a six-year hiatus from recording. The evening was personal and light as the pretty and personable Clark charmed the congregation in her familiar way. Fans responded with obvious love and admiration as if Clark were their own sister. But not to be outdone, Clark’s real sisters were in the midst. Jackie, Dorinda and Karen were in the house and took the stage separately and corporately in support of their elder sister. Karen and Dorinda handed off the mic in assisting Twinkie in a two-song tribute to their mother, the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. And then all the sisters got together to revisit two past Clark Sisters hits “Pray for the USA” and “Endow Me”. Karen took a moment to playfully scold Jackie as she tried to arrange her cheat notes, and ultimately took them from her, laughingly encouraging her to “Call on the Lord to bring the words to your remembrance!“ Dorinda then stepped in to spread some family love and appreciation for Twinkie’s gift and the countless songs she has contributed to the Gospel industry. One could talk about the ridiculous vocal acrobatics that ensued with Elektra’s Karen Clark and Gospocentric’s Dorinda Clark as the sisters rendered in song, but it was Twinkie’s night and she held court worthy of it’s own report.
Patrick Love and Spirit of David expertly backed Clark in the first half of the recording, with a small ensemble holding down the background vocals for the second half. Clark’s young son John-John joined her to rap a solo spot on “Brighter Day”. Super producer Cedric Thompson was at the helm and MD’d to delight as usual. Clark’s personality warmed the joint in an “ain’t no shame in my game” kind of way, as she smiled, joked with here sisters on and off stage, and flirted with the cameras. With a great selection of songs and a voice that grows more spectacular with the years, the live recording and video are due from Verity Records this summer (2002).
