What's Theirs is Mime Gospelflava.com: The art of mime, while no longer rare, is still sometimes not understood. How do you describe the role of your ministry in relation to Gospel Music? K&K Mime: Well, it coincides with Gospel music because we take the Gospel songs from the top Gospel artists and then turn them into an understanding. Most people who see us say, ‘Wow, I really did not understand that song until I saw K&K Mime act out the words to it’. We bring out the meaning of the song. Gospel Music is good news that we share in much the same way as, say, Kirk Franklin would, but we do it in our own unique way, that God ordained us to do. Gospelflava.com: The songs that you choose to mime are some of the most powerful ones out there. What is it about a song that particularly gets your attention? K&K Mime: It’s the story behind the song. It must not only sound good, or be sung by someone with a great voice, but it must have the anointing all over it, because it is the anointing that destroys the yokes, and we want and expect for yokes to be broken while ministry is going forth. Gospelflava.com: As identical twins, you are no doubt a close under any circumstances. But as a mime duo, can you describe how you work together? For example, what would be the steps in creating a mimed performance? K&K Mime: We do work very, very well together. Keith is the one who operates and runs all the business aspects of the ministry, while Karl is the creative-minded one, the one who actually choreographs the songs and handles anything that has to do with putting them together. We’re a great team.
K&K Mime: We have been doing this type of ministry for fifteen years now. We started when our mom made us act out the words to scriptures while she read them. We thought that was so boring, so we decided to add a little twist to it, and we put on the white face paint and chose one of the hottest songs out 15 years ago "In Return" by CeCe Winans. After that, we received a standing ovation. People now call us the pioneers of this type of ministry because we put before the public eye first, and at the time we were the only ones who were doing it. Now, mimes are all over the country, and out of the country. Praise God for that. Gospelflava.com: What would you describe as your first big break, the one event that catapulted K&K Mime to the forefront? K&K Mime: We were in our home town of Pittsburgh, and we were the opening act of a Kirk Franklin concert. One the songs that we mimed in that concert was Kirk’s "Letter To My Friend". After we were done, we exited the stage and while making our way back to our dressing room, we ran into Kirk Franklin & The Family, who had tears in their eyes. After that, Kirk asked us to travel with him, and we agreed. Later, on our down time at home, the phone rings and it was Dr. Bobby Jones who said “Kirk called me and told me about your ministry, can you come and be apart of my television show?”. Our response, of course, was yes, so we did the show. After that, we began to travel all over the country. Gospelflava.com: To date, you have mimed to Gospel songs, both contemporary and traditional. Have you ever considered expanding your interpretations to the world of Christian Contemporary Music (CCM)? K&K Mime: Yes, that has really been on our hearts lately. We have already planned to put songs like “Mercy Me”, “I Could Only Imagine" in our repertoire. We would love to appeal to all denominations. In fact, we will soon release an all-CCM video to reach a market that has not been touched yet by this type of ministry. Gospelflava.com: If you could mime for any artists in their concert for a few selections, who would it be and why? K&K Mime: It would have to be Pastor Donnie McClurkin and Minister Fred Hammond, because the annointing is not only in their songs but they have the anointing while singing them as well. They really minister to us in a way that alot of artist don't. It’s hard to make K&K Mime cry, but these two gentlemen make it happen. We both relate to their lyrics, and you can tell they put meaning behind everything they write.
