Gospel 101: Go Dominate! Under the direction of Kevin Turner, the 125-voice collegiate collective from UAB is on fire from beginning to end, layering their abundant youthful energy over a set of impressive songs and innovate arrangements. You can't miss the concert DVD either, as it comes packaged with the project (you shouldn't miss it either, with its meld of dance, mime and other visual elements that deliver the full gospel visual experience). Starting off the project is "After You've Prayed About It (tell me why ya' worrying too?)", an original from the pen of Turner that boisterously offers encouragement to leave matters in God's hands. Marquita Anthony sings wonderfully on lead vocals, with Steven D. Wilson adding the hype. On "There Is A Fountain", Turner arranges the familiar hymn by giving the melody just enough of a tweak to pique ears. Both cuts take full advantage of the choir's ability to deliver tenor-alto-soprano lines intricately woven into the musical fabric.UAB quarterback Sam Hunt takes the vocal lead on "Nothing Goes Unnoticed", a song written to remember the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre. The mellow rendering of the cut, backed predominantly by keyboard, is apropos to the sentiment of the lyrics. Keyboardist Clinton Green put his pen to "Dominion," taking his cue from God's directive in Genesis. The choir takes this upbeat, edgy title cut and runs with it. The original anthem "Resurrection" anthem allows the choir to revel in the characteristic elements of this class of composition, as Eric Essix adds rough edges with his guitar stylings. Closing out the album is the throwback "Trust Him & Old School Medley" (a tribute to the memory of Bishop Robert W. McMurray and Rev. James Cleveland), plus a remake of "Everybody Ought to Know", the choir's smash hit from their debut project. With a project like this, let's just hope the UAB administrators are ready for an onset of registrations in their popular gospel choir programme, because you simply can't get a better endorsement than an album like this.
