O'landa Draper and the Associates Celebration of Life
Myrrh Records is the first out of the blocks with what will surely be one of several
comemorative projects for the late groundbreaking Gospel choir director, O'landa
Draper.
The compilation is titled Celebration of
Life, and was released to coincide with the
first anniversary of O'landa Draper's sudden homegoing in July of 1998. Comprising
a set of ten songs, each are uniquely identified with O'landa Draper
and
the Associates, coming from three of the four albums which
he recorded for the label beginning in 1989, before moving on to the Warner Alliance label. His discography with
Myrrh includes:
All the Bases
Do It Again
Above and Beyond
Live….A Celebration of Praise
Included in the mix in this compliation are "He Touched Me", "Jeremiah's Groove", and the
riveting acappella signature tune
that pumped local church and community choirs across the
nation, "My Soul Doth Magnify The Lord".
The CD liner notes,
while sparse in text, provide an interesting mix of
historical photos and peer tributes.
Always innovative, joyous, and overflowing with
expression, this collection demonstrates why Draper’s music led to two
Grammy awards, six Grammy nominations, and multiple Stellar,
Dove and Vision awards.
