Classic Gold
LA Mass Choir, New Jersey Mass Choir and Andrae Crouch Singers
Calling it their Classic Gold collection, Light Records has revived several popular titles from their much-vaunted catalogue riches by re-releasing them with remastering from Glenn Meadows. With album covers now framed in gold, they truly are precious gems from decades gone by.
This is Andrae Crouch in his heyday. Touching all the bases and serving up a soul-wrenching performance with his singers (including Billy Thedford, sister Sandra Crouch, Fletch Wiley and Danniebelle Hall) and with players such as Billy Preston on organ, Bill Maxwell on drums and Joe Sample on keys, the album debuted future classics such as "Take Me Back", "Just Like He Said He Would", "You Can Depend on Me" and "Praises".
Donny Harper's choir collective soared into popularity territory with this 1986 album. New Jersey Mass' trademark flawless sound and Harper's always-recognizable pipes and stellar songwriting skills brought strong songs such as "Praise Him" and "I'll Tell It" to the fore, pieces that are still being covered by choirs today.
Their 1988 live album revealed the many sides of The LA Mass Choir, with their gorgeously rendered version of "Love Lifted Me" leading the way. Director Donald Taylor puts the choir through their paces, with songwriter Tony Wilkins penning much of the material. "Grace" also hit the favorite pile across the nation with its bass-rich anchor, testimonial lead vocals and distinctive hook "grace, wondrous grace"..
