Kimberly Brown By His Stripes
Former Sounds of Blackness member Kimberly Brown brings an easy listening
Gospel flow to this, her debut solo release. As choir director of
two Minneapolis-based Gospel ensembles, she brings her significant experience
to the fore, backed by quality production
and solid lyrics.
With ten scripturally-based songs comprising the set, Brown's smooth and soothing
alto/tenor vocals are the predominant
focus throughout. Citing both CeCe Winans and Russ Taff as vocal
inspirations, these eclectic influences are both heard on the disc.
Brown has a vocal inflection remarkably
similar to Winans at some points, as well as to Oleta Adams. As for Russ Taff, check out the
inspired interpretation of his hit "We Will Stand", which comes complete with full backing vocals
from the combined efforts of Capital City COGIC Choir and the Minnesota
Mass Choir.
All songs from this project mesh smoothly into a quiet storm vibe, or would even
find themselves welcome
as vocal interludes in a smooth jazz format. Any time taken to find this album would be worthwhile.
(This CD may be hard to find; if it's not
at your local Gospel music store, you can order it
directly from the artist, by emailing her)
