Life Captured

Erick Matthews
Life Captured

Some might remember Erick Matthews from his time with John P. Kee's New Life Community Choir, or perhaps from his Verity solo debut, Friend 4 Always. Others will recall his Crystal Rose project in 2001, No Fear In Me (read review). On Life Captured from Gumbo Entertainment / Avista Records, the contemporary vocalist delivers another set of soul-laden cuts.

CD Harnessing his songwriting skills and tenor vocal abilities, Matthews offers up thirteen new songs, ranging from reflective ballads ("Love") to intensely dramatic battle cuts ("Truth") and inspirational encouragement ("Hold On", "Change Gone Come").

On "Wilderness", Matthews tells of his spiritual journey, offering encouragement to others in so doing. With a reggae-influenced track and a catchy vocal chorus, the mid-tempo groove showcases the best of the artists' abilities, both musical and lyrical.

Aaron Gordon Jr. lends his guitar stylings to the pulsating "Joy" as Matthews takes occasional detours into falsetto range, telling of the joy that God gives. The jazzed-up bonus cut "Payday" reminds that while justice may not be served on earth, God is the final judge, and rewards those who are faithful. On "Latter Rain", quick-paced rhythm patterns percolate underneath the backing chorus and Matthews acrobatic vocal line.

Life Captured is a worthy effort that brings Erick Matthews back to the scene, adding more depth to the burgeoning contemporary projects making their mark.
