Edwin Hawkins Love Is The Only Way
Edwin Hawkins is one of the few true pioneers of contemporary gospel music,
joining such company as Thomas Whitfield, James Cleveland and Andrae Crouch.
In addition to influencing countless, this veteran has been going strong himself
for decades now, with numerous Music & Arts Seminars and other projects.
Although this newest album is billed as a solo project, many will be enthused
to hear that cousin Lawrence Matthews and sister Lynette Hawkins Stephens
also feature prominently in solo leads. The cuts on this album can only
be described as having that "Hawkins" sound --something on that smooth and
somewhat relaxed tip. If you've ever heard it, you know exactly what I
mean. The exception to this rule is the remake of the song that started
the gospel ball rolling back in the late sixties, "Oh Happy Day".
Sampled, covered and reworked since then by many, it resurfaces here
with a driving, dance-like groove. (Although you may hear other remix
versions on your FM dial, these are only available to radio).
Other notable tracks include "Child of the King" with Lawrence Matthews
on lead, and "Praise Medley" where Hawkins masterfully arranges and melds
praise and worship favorites such as "We Exalt Thee", "Dear Jesus I Love
You" and "I Love You Lord". Don't be losing this album in the pack.
