B. Chase Williams & ShaBach
The Heart Of A Worshipper, Volume 1
It's been nearly seven years since we heard from B. Chase Williams & ShaBach.
Known for their stellar hit, "Take A Trip", the Stellar-nominated choir is back with their third release titled The Heart of a Worshipper Volume 1. This project is their first on their new label, RadiKal Rekords, and it reintroduces the world to the prowess of the Atlanta aggregation.
Make no mistake, Williams & ShaBach are back, and back strong. This 14-track set offers songs from genuine worship to straight-up praise with a distinctly urban twist. Perhaps it's that twist that is the most notable takeaway from this project. Williams is effortless in taking genuine worship and imparting a notable street flava to it.
Contributing to the urban flair is Williams' new band, aptly titled The RadiKal Krew (Justin Gilbert-keyboards, Immanuel Lewis-keyboards/organ, Labron Remmer-drums, James Barrett-drums, Daryll Freeman-bass, Jesse Bond-lead guitar). With Gilbert serving as musical director and co-producer of the project, the Krew provides the perfect backdrop for ShaBach as they drop some serious choral fire on your eardrums.
Within the opening seconds of this project, you note the distinct growth of Williams & ShaBach as they do their thing with "They Blessed Me". The uptempo groove is heavy on keyboard bass and is an introspective look at Williams & ShaBach's journey to continuing their choral ministry. Penned by VaShawn Mitchell (musical director for Bishop Larry Trotter), this song speaks to how others may speak against you but their words can be used as catalysts to bless you. The celebration sees Williams on lead vocals and serving more of a hype man than a vocalist, which accents the spirit of the song.
One of the hallmarks of The Heart of A Worshipper is the musicality found within each song. There's something special to each cut, each well-crafted with small nuances. It serves to distinguish Williams & ShaBach from other choirs out there.
"Secret Place" begins with that distinct millenial bounce and then switches tempos mid-stream, reverting to a more simplistic groove that keeps your head nodding. "Real" is a definite cross between heavy R&P and neo-soul in its offering, as it serves as a fresh rendition of the old-school hymn of the same name. "Worthy" is a relatively simple worship song that gains its musical identity from the unpredictable key changes that keep you guessing where ShaBach will go next.
Amid all of the intriguing musicality, you indeed encounter the true essence of worship on this project. Songs like "Lord I Worship You" and "High Praise" easily usher you into the presence of God with heavenly harmonies and genuine lyrics that render sincere worship to God.
"Closer" literally paints a picture of the Tabernacle of old and expresses a heartfelt desire to experience God's presence. "Grace and Mercy" is a real love ballad to God that reminds us that we are all that we are because of His grace and mercy. "What Love" begins as a cover of "Oh How He Loves You and Me", but gains its own identity as ShaBach expresses the awesome love of God. The reprise to this is "A Love Story", which features commentary from Evangelist Lillian Lloyd who paints a vivid picture of Christ's journey to the cross. Consider it the auditory equivalent to Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. The vivid detail given in this narration vividly demonstrates the depth of Christ's love for us and is portrayed masterfully by Lloyd.
B. Chase Williams & ShaBach are back and they haven't missed a beat in fact, they've raised the bar with this effort. It's apparent from a listen to this project that each song is birthed from experience. If you listen closely, you'll hear The Heart of A Worshipper.
