Aretha Franklin
One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism —2003 Re-Issue

Nearly anyone serious about Gospel music has had this album in their collection for some years now. If you don't have it, well, you should have it.

CDIt's been over fifteen years since the legendary Aretha Franklin entered her father's church, New Bethel Baptist in Detroit, the same place where she recorded her very first album in 1956 (for Checker Records), and laid down her third Gospel masterpiece —One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism in a live session that stretched out over three successive evenings in July, 1987.

And now, some wise soul at BMG Heritage has seen fit to not only re-release the project to the market, but also to crack open the vaults a bit and add four previously unreleased tracks to the mix.

Produced by Franklin herself, The Queen of Soul duets with Mavis Staples, Rev. Jasper Williams, Joe Ligon and also her own siblings, The Franklin Sisters (Erma Aretha FranklinFranklin, Carolyn Franklin, Brenda Corbett) in bringing her soul to traditional gems such as "The Lord's Prayer", "Higher Ground", "Surely God Is Able" and "I've Been In The Storm Too Long".

Several spoken word intros and prayer selections are also included (Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Cecil Franklin, Rev. Jasper Williams) and Minister Thomas A. Whitfield's choir and musical arrangements remain classic.

But you probably already know all this. Hold on tight though, because here's where things get interesting.

Added to the album's original 16 tracks is an alternate take of the Clara Ward classic, "Packing Up, Getting Ready To Go", which like the familiar first take, features Mavis Staples, Joe Ligon and The Franklin Sisters each with contributions. This version, slightly shorter at 5:16 minutes, begins with an unfettered piano intro from Nick Johnson.

Also new to the ear is the interpretation of Walter Hawkins' "Be Grateful" which showcases Franklin with the choir and vocal interjections from Staples.

Charles Tindley's "Beams of Heaven (Some Day)" is a slow-tempoed burn at over 7 minutes with Franklin and Ligon reveling in song and the classic hymn "Father I Stretch My Hand To Thee" which features some masterful vocal interplay between Franklin and Staples over a tinderbox jazzed accompaniment.

With remastered sound from Mark Wilder and extensive new liner notes from reknowned soul specialist David Nathan, it's now a full 119 minutes of Gospel soul.
