Fan Favorite Stellar Award Winners Announced —  The votes have been calculated for the 2010 Stellar Award Fan Favorite categories. Congratulations to Hezekiah Walker & LFC's "Souled Out" ("Song of the Year"), Kim Ruff ("New Artist of the Year"), and Philip Carter & SOV ("Choir of the Year") for their wins in these categories. Top Gospel Albums —  WOW Gospel 2010, the latest installment in the famed WOW Gospel catalogue, makes an impressive debut atop the Billboard Top Gospel Charts. In addition, the series debuts at #40 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums charts. Encore, the latest from James Fortune & FIYA debuts at #2 this week while charting #14 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts and #51 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums charts. BeBe & CeCe Winans' Still moves to the #3 position while The Master Plan from Tamela Mann take the #4 position. Fred Hammond's latest Love Unstoppable rounds out the week's top five albums. In other chart news, the compilation Shoutin' Down The Aisles debuts at #8 while Lecrae's Rebel jumps seven spots to #17.

In the world of radio, "They That Wait" from Fred Hammond & John P. Kee celebrates its eleventh week atop the radio charts. Earnest Pugh's "Rain On Us" holds on to the #2 position, while Marvin Sapp's "The Best In Me" jumps to the #3 position. "Close To You" from BeBe & CeCe Winans takes the #4 position, while "God In Me" from Mary Mary featuring Kierra Sheard rounds out the week's top five songs. (Feb. 7, 2010)
 



Hip Hop Tandem Platinum Souls Part Ways —  After an eight year run, hip hop duo Platinum Souls has ended their partnership. The Atlanta based duo of Ricardo FLO and Ms. Ty Scott formed in 2002 and produced six mixtapes, a compilation album, and their long awaited LP titled Hybrid. The LP produced the single "Dey Don't Know" which peaked at #2 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Charts, maintaining top 10 status for months. Both artists are pursuing solo efforts. Gospel Music Channel Names Videos of the Year —  The Gospel Music Channel recently announced the winners of its 2009 GMC Music Video Awards. Winners include Marvin Winans, Jr for Best Soul Video ("You Never Let Me Down"), Lecrae for Best Hip Hop Video ("Don't Waste Your Life") and tobyMac featuring Kirk Franklin and Mandisa for Best Pop Video and Best Overall Video ("Lose My Soul"). (Feb. 5, 2010)  



Kirk Franklin Pens New Book —  Singer, songwriter, and producer Kirk Franklin adds another title to his resume as the Fo Yo Soul/Verity Gospel Music Group artist is penning a brand new book. The new effort, titled The Blueprint: A Plan for Living Above Life's Storms, is set for release on May 18, 2010 and will also be available on audiobook. Franklin's first book, Church Boy, released over a decade ago. (Feb. 4, 2010)  



NFL Readies for SuperBowl Gospel Celebration —  The NFL is preparing for the 11th Annual SuperBowl Gospel Celebration which takes place on February 5, 2010 at the James L. Knight Convention Center in Miami, FL. This event is the only NFL sanctioned gospel event and will feature Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans, Israel Houghton. Karen Clark Sheard, and Canton Jones. The NFL Players Choir will also make a special appearance as part of the evening's festivities. (updated Feb. 3, 2010)  



Jonathan Nelson Preps for Live Recording —  Singer, songwriter, and Integrity Music artist Jonathan Nelson is gearing up for a new live recording. The session takes place in Nelson's new church home, The Faith Center, in Sunrise, Florida on February 26, 2010. This third recording will again feature Nelson's group Purpose. Nelson's latest effort Right Now Praise won him three Stellar awards including the nod for "New Artist of the Year". (Feb. 2, 2010)  



Blind Boys to Perform at the White House —  The legendary Blind Boys of Alabama have been invited to participate in a special concert at the White House on February 10, 2010. Titled “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement”, the concert is designed to help celebrate Black History Month. Other performers for the event include Bob Dylan, John Legend, Seal, Jennifer Hudson, John Mellencamp, Natalie Cole and Smokey Robinson, with President & First Lady Obama in attendance. The special emcees for the event are Queen Latifah and Morgan Freeman. The event will stream live on the White House website and then air on PBS on February 11. (Feb. 2, 2010)  



Pastor Shawn M. Brown Passes —  Pastor Shawn M. Brown passed away on January 31, 2010. Shawn Brown was one of the original co-directors of the choir Youthful Praise, together with JJ Hairston. An avid and gifted songwriter, he penned "Awesome God" and several other hits. More recently, he launched his own group, Shawn Brown & Key of David, releasing an album in 2008 on the JP Music Group. Bishop Norman Wagner Passes —  Bishop Norman Wagner, former presiding prelate of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW), passed on January 30, 2010. Wagner was one of the Kingdom's most distinct voices as a world renowned teacher, preacher, and pastor of Calvary Ministries International in Youngstown, OH. Wagner along with his Mount Calvary Concert Choir released two albums on Word Records in the early 1990s, producing the hits "Best For Last" featuring Pastor Marvin Winans and "Worthy Is The Lamb". Y'Anna Crawley to Perform at John F. Kennedy Center —  BET Sunday Best Season 2 Winner Y'Anna Crawley will be the featured artist for the Washington Performing Arts Society Men, Women, & Children of the Gospel on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010. The event takes place at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.. Crawley returns to the event as a 16-year alumnus of the Children of the Gospel. The national recording artist will sing for an already sold out crowd of 2500. (Jan. 28, 2010)  



Alvin Williams Leaves Gospel Music Channel —  Alvin Williams, Senior Director of Music, Talent, and Acquisitions has exited the Gospel Music Channel due to network restructuring. Williams was a founding employee of the network five years ago, contributing to its meteoric growth from 3,000 homes to availability in over 47 million households. During his tenure, Williams worked with Charley Humbard, Brad Siegel and Paul Butler to help build the network, assisting in the launch of series programming such as Front Row Live, Faith and Fame, Revealed, Hype & Glory, Gospel Dream, and Espiritu Latino. Williams also took place in the creation of the historic document that was passed by the U.S. Senate and Congress which deems the month of September as Gospel Music Heritage Month. Prior to his work with GMC, Williams created divisions and companies for others as Word Records and Music World Gospel now Spirit Rising. Williams will now focus on building his company and his wife's efforts. (Jan. 28, 2010)  



Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir Raises $80,000 for Haiti —  The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir recently organized a march and benefit concert in support of Haitian Relief efforts. The three hundred voice, six-time GRAMMY award winning choir, joined by 1,200 others, marched across New York's famed Brooklyn Bridge waving purple flags and distributing tickets to their weekend benefit concert. The outdoor concert drew over 1,000 attendees and raised $80,000 for two daily feeding programs that the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church has supported in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel for several years. Chicago's Hope for Haiti Benefit Concert —  Chicago's gospel community is assembling to sponsor "Chicago's Hope for Haiti" benefit concert. Spearheaded by Illinois State Senator Rev. James Meeks and prominent Chicago pastor Rev. Charles Jenkins, the benefit concert takes place on Feb. 8, 2010 at the 10,000-seat venue, The House of Hope. The all-star event will feature performances from Donald Lawrence & Company, Marvin Sapp, Karen Clark Sheard, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Maurette Brown Clark, Byron Cage, Mark Hubbard & the Voices, The Sweet Holy Spirit Choir, under the direction of Ricky Dillard, New Direction, Chicago Mass Choir, Joshua’s Troop, DeAndre Patterson, Dr. Bobby Jones, and John P. Kee. The evening's hosts will be WGRB 1390 AM on-air personalities Pastor John Hannah and Angela Martin. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Samaritan’s Purse and Hospitals for Humanity. Kim Burrell Prepares for New Album —  Shanachie Records recording artist and vocal powerhouse Kim Burrell begins 2010 in a major way. The 2010 Stellar award nominee has lost 100 pounds after suffering a heart attack while on tour in 2009. Following the weight loss, Burrell is refocusing her agenda to empower women who struggle with weight issues and low self-esteem. She has signed her first international endorsement deal, preparing for a new reality series, and is set to record her first non-gospel album. (Jan. 22, 2010)  



Kirk Franklin Heads All-Star Gospel Single for Haiti —  In light of the recent Haitian tragedies, the gospel music community has come together in a unprecedented effort to raise money for those displaced by the recent earthquakes. Spearheaded by Kirk Franklin, a bevy of artists have contributed to the new single titled "Are You Listening". Recorded in Nashville, TN on Jan. 15, 2010, the single features Yolanda Adams, Jeremy Camp, Shirley Caesar, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Natalie Grant, Fred Hammond, Tamela & David Mann, Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin, Bishop Paul S. Morton, J. Moss, Smokie Norful, Marvin Sapp, Karen Clark-Sheard, Kierra Sheard, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Marvin Winans, and many others. Proceeds from the single will be donated to charity. The single is set to debut on a variety of radio formats including gospel, pop, and urban AC on Jan. 22, 2010. Similarly, the video for the single will debut on the Gospel Music Channel on Jan. 23, 2010 with continual airplay from 6p-7p ET and will feature a special interview with Kirk Franklin. James Roberson Makes Vatican Debut —  JDI Records artist and CEO Prof. James Roberson was a featured performer for the "New Millenium Concert at the Vatican" in Rome, Italy on January 17-18. Roberson performed his hit single "Everybody Dance" with a 200 voice youth choir. In addition, Roberson debuted his new single "Praise the Lord" and performed the classic Italian aria "Comme Raggio di Sol". (Jan. 19, 2010)  



Stellar Winners Announced—  The official results for the 25th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards were announced on January 15 and 16th from ceremonies held in Nashville. Multiple winners included Hezekiah Walker, Mary Mary, Vickie Winans and Crystal Aikin. Check here for the complete list:

GMA Announces Host & Performers for GMA Dove Awards —  The Gospel Music Association (GMA) is preparing for the 41st Annual GMA Dove Awards. This year's awards will take place on April 21, 2010 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN. 2009 GMA Vocalist of the Year Natalie Grant and MercyMe frontman Bart Milliard will host this year's festivities. Scheduled performers include Casting Crowns, tobyMac, Donald Lawrence, Jason Crabb, Natalie Grant, and MercyMe among others. The 41st Annual GMA Dove Awards will air on April 24, 2010 exclusively on the Gospel Music Channel at 8p ET. (Jan. 12, 2010)  



Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace Headed to Film —  Aretha Franklin's 1972 album Amazing Grace is heading towards a major theatrical release. While the album is a classic and a best-seller, the two-night recording session at L.A.'s New Temple Missionary Baptist Church was also captured on film, with the late and renowned director Sidney Pollack at the helm. Producer Alan Elliott is now overseeing the project, working with film editor William Steinkamp, and has been pouring over the over-20 hours of footage that till now, have been tucked away in vaults. Included in the footage are not only Aretha Franklin, but Rev. James Cleveland on piano and Rev. Alexander Hamilton directing the Southern California Community Choir. Plans are to release the gem, to be titled Grace, in the not too distant future. (Jan. 11, 2010)  



NAACP Image Award Nominees Announced —  Recently, the nominees for the 41st annual NAACP Image Awards were announced. This year's nominees in the "Outstanding Gospel Album (Traditional or Contemporary)" category include Shirley Caesar, Vickie Winans, Fred Hammond, BeBe & CeCe Winans, and Donnie McClurkin. Congratulations are also in order for Mary Mary as the received a nomination in the "Outstanding Song" category for their hit "God In Me". This year's ceremony emanates from The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA and airs live February 26, 2010 at 8p ET on FOX. (Jan. 7, 2010)  



Holy Hip Hop Awards Returns to Atlanta —  The 10th Annual Holy Hip Hop Awards returns to Atlanta, GA on January 15-16, 2010. Emanating from the Earthlink Live Center Stage Arena, this year's event will feature seminars and artist showcases, with the awards show taking place on Jan. 16. This year will feature the special "Eternal Solider Award", which will be given to Cross Movement co-founder, the late Juan "Enock" James. (Jan. 6, 2010)  



E.B. Williams Passes —  E.B. Williams, mother of Ton3x, passed away on December 28, 2009. Williams was a national evangelist, recording artist, and assistant pastor of Truth Apostolic Community Church in San Diego, CA. Williams released her solo album Simply Because in January 2000 and was featured on several projects with her son Ton3x, including appearances on the compilation MSS Dynasty: The Hostile Takeover, The Bapost.o.g.i.c Mixtape, and The Naked Truth Mixtape. Marie "Ma" Draper Passes —  Marie "Ma" Draper, matriarch of the Draper family, passed away on December 27, 2009 after complications stemming from hypertension. She was 69 years old. Draper was the mother of famed choir director, five-time GRAMMY nominee, and Stellar and Dove award winner, the late O'Landa Draper. "Ma" Draper was a guiding force in her son's career and served as manager for her son's choir, The Associates for several years. Gospel Superfest Returns —  For the second consecutive year, Allstate returns as the title sponsor for the Allstate Gospel Superfest, which holds its upcoming TV taping on January 9, 2010 on the campus of Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. The High Definition recording will feature over 30 artists including J. Moss, Richard Smallwood, Vickie Winans, The Whispers, Karen Clark-Sheard, James Fortune & FIYA, Jonathan Nelson, RiZen, Kierra Sheard, and many others. In addition, Gospel Superfest will present its Lifetime Acheivement Award to Bishop Hezekiah Walker. Produced by founder Dr. Bobby Cartwright, this year's show will be hosted by Vivica A. Calvin Hunt Passes —  Vine Records recording artist Calvin Hunt passed in a NY hospital on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009 after a battle with cancer. He was 52 years old. Hunt was a lead vocalist for The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and Christ Tabernacle Choir. His most recent solo effort, Bridges, garnered two GMA Award nominations for Contemporary Gospel Recording and Contemporary Gospel Song for the single "Come On". There will be a memorial service for Hunt on Dec. 29, 2009 at 7pm with the committal service taking place Dec. 30, 2009 at 11am. All services will be held at Christ Tabernacle in Glendale, NY. NBA Readies for All-Star Gospel Brunch —  The NBA is gearing up to celebrate gospel music with the 5th Annual All-Star Gospel Brunch, which takes place February 13, 2010 in Dallas, TX as part of NBA All-Star Weekend. The event will feature performances from Donnie McClurkin, Fred Hammond, James Fortune, Angella Christie, and Ricardo Sanchez. This year, the brunch will honor area pastors including Pastor Frederick Haynes, Pastor Gary Oliver, Dr. Tony Evans, and Bishop Kenneth Spears. Paula White and Jonathan Slocumb will host this year's event. (Dec. 28, 2009)  



BET Readies for Sunday Best 3 Auditions —  BET is gearing up for auditions for the third season of its wildly successful show Sunday Best. Their first set of auditions began earlier this month in Nigeria. The show brings its search to the United States with two casting calls. The first set of auditions takes place on Jan. 30, 2010 in Detroit, Michigan and on February 20, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. A third city for auditions is to be determined and will be announced later. BMI Names 2010 Trailblazer Honorees —  Donnie McClurkin and Andrae Crouch have been named the 2010 honorees at the 11th Annual BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Luncheon. The invitation-only luncheon takes place on January 15, 2010, the day before the 25th Annual Stellar Awards, and will convene at Rocketown in Nashville, TN. (Dec. 15, 2009)  



Phil Tarver Set to Record Live Album —  Kingdom Records artist Phil Tarver is preparing to record his third solo release. The live recording takes place on February 20, 2010 at Valley Kingdom Ministries, in Oak Forest, IL. Tarver is best known for his role as worship leader of Shekinah Glory Ministry, who is the first ensemble to garner five gold certifications for CD and DVD releases. Tarver's latest single "Better Than That" has reached Top 20 status and received major airplay at radio. (Dec. 15, 2009)  



Marvin Sapp to Release New Album —  On the heels of his recent live recording, Verity Gospel Music Group artist Marvin Sapp is set to release his newest album, titled Here I Am. The first single from the album, "The Best In Me", hits radio this week, with the full-length album releasing in stores March 16, 2010. This is the eighth solo release for the Grand Rapids-based pastor, whose last release Thirsty garnered eight Stellar awards and produced the history making single "Never Would Have Made It". Here I Am is available for pre-order at the Verity Records website. (Dec. 10, 2009)  



New Artists Added to BET Celebration of Gospel —  BET's Celebration of Gospel just got a little bigger as the event has added on several performers for its tenth anniversary show. Donald Lawrence, Yolanda Adams, Ledisi, and BET Sunday Best Season 2 Winner Y'Anna Crawley join the star-studded list of performers for the impressive show. This year's event tapes on December 12, 2009 at The Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. Steve Harvey continues his role as host of the show, in its tenth year. The 2010 Celebration of Gospel airs on BET on January 10, 2010. (Dec. 8, 2009)  



BET Sunday Best Auditions Go International —  BET is readying for its third season of the wildly successful series Sunday Best by taking its auditions abroad for the first time. The first set of auditions will take place in Lagos, Nigeria on Dec. 6, 2009. Celebrity judges for the Nigeria session Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell, and Nigerian gospel artist Muyiwa Olarewaju. Dates and cities for U.S. auditions are yet to be announced. (Dec. 3, 2009)  



J Moss Prepares for 1st DVD Recording —  Verity Gospel Music Group recording artist and Stellar Award winner J. Moss is preparing for his first live DVD concert recording. The recording takes place on Dec. 13, 2009 at Straight Gate Church in Detroit, MI with a 7pm start time. Special guests for the recording include Karen Clark Sheard, 21:03, and Antwaun Stanley. The DVD recording is the follow up to Moss' most recent release Just James which debuted atop the Billboard Top Gospel Albums charts. (Dec. 2, 2009)  



PJ Morton Readies for Solo Release —  GRAMMY and Stellar award winning writer and artist PJ Morton is preparing for his fifth studio album titled Walk Alone. Released on the Songs of Solomon (S.O.S.) Music imprint, this effort continues Morton's focus on holistic love songs. The album will feature a guest appearance from Tweet and guest production from Warryn Campbell. The new album will be in stores and released digitally on Feb. 9, 2010. (Dec. 1, 2009)  



Mary Mary Wins Soul Train Music Award —  Congratulations to Mary Mary who walked away with the 2009 Soul Train Music Award in the category of "Best Gospel Performance (Male, Female, or Group)" for the song "God in Me". The group bested Fred Hammond, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Marvin Sapp, and Smokie Norful for the award. This continues a big month for the duo, as last week, they won the American Music Award for "Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist". (Nov. 30, 2009)  



Casting Crowns Charts Big —  Popular group Casting Crowns celebrates an impressive week on the Billboard Top 200 charts. Their latest release Until The Whole World Hears, enters the charts at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Charts, outselling the latest releases from 50 Cent, Justin Bieber, and Carrie Underwood. The group's holiday offering Peace On Earth enters those same charts at #15, marking a historic week for the Dove award winning group. (Nov. 29, 2009)  



Mary Mary Wins AMA —  Congratulations to Mary Mary who won the American Music Award for "Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist" at the 37th Annual American Music Awards. The sisterly tandem beat out Jeremy Camp and Brandon Heath to win the coveted award. (Nov. 23, 2009)  



GI Members Launch School of the Arts —  Recording artists Branden Anderson and Curtis Langley, members of the group God's Image aka GI, are launching the BGA School of the Arts. The school will focus on lessons for instrumentalists, music theory, learning techniques for children, and vocal lessons. Open enrollment begins in December with the grand opening of the school taking place on January 4, 2010. (Nov. 20, 2009)  



James Fortune & FIYA to Record Live —  Black Smoke Music artists James Fortune & FIYA are gearing up for their first live recording. The DVD session takes place on Dec. 3, 2009 at the Arena Theatre in Houston, TX. Special guests for the recording include Coco Brother and Pastor William Murphy III. The aggregation's most recent effort The Transformation produced the hit "I Trust You", which spent over 30 weeks atop the Billboard Top Gospel Songs charts. Fortune & FIYA will release their new album Encore on Jan. 26, 2010. Special guests for the album include Kierra Sheard, William Murphy III, Lowell Pye, and Isaac Carree. (updated Nov. 18, 2009)  



Bushwick Bill Releases Lead Single for Gospel Release —  Legendary rapper Bushwick Bill has just released the video to his latest single "Testimony of Redemption", which is the title track from his upcoming gospel rap album. The Geto Boys alumnus uses the video and single to chronicle his life story from his meteoric hip hop success to his suicide attempt. The video features cameo appearances from Lil Wayne, KRS-One, Busta Rhymes, and Tre9. The full release, Testimony of Redemption, hits stores on December 1, 2009 on the G-S.P.O.T. Productionz imprint. Chequita Lumzy of The Lumzy Sisters Passes —  Chequita Lumzy Wiggins, lead singer of the female gospel quartet The Lumzy Sisters, passed on October 24, 2009 at age 50. The popular group made numerous appearances on popular gospel outlets including Singsation and Bobby Jones Gospel. Most notably, the quartet was named "Female Quartet of the Year" at the American Gospel Quartet Convention for eight consecutive years. Likewise, Wiggins was named "Female Vocalist of the Year" by the convention during those same eight years. The group released six albums, with their latest project Precious being released in 1995. Wiggins was co-pastor of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA. Super Group Witness to Reunite —  Stellar award and GRAMMY nominated supergroup Witness will be making their long-awaited return with a reunion album. The Witness Reunion project will be a live recording that takes place Fall 2010 and will feature all of the original group members including Lisa Page Brooks, Laeh Jones, Lou Stewart, and Diane Brooks. The album will be released on Shophar Music, the new label spearheaded by famed writer & producer Pastor Michael Brooks. (Oct. 24, 2009)  



Tina Campbell Gives Birth —  Congratulations to Mary Mary's Tina Campbell who gave birth to a baby boy on Oct. 20, 2009. Campbell, along with husband and Soul Seekers' member Teddy Campbell, welcomed 7lb, 18inch TJ into the world, marking the third child for the couple. In addition, Campbell's sister Erica has also announced that she is three months pregnant with her second child. Campbell is married to super producer Warryn Campbell. (Oct. 20, 2009)  



Founding Member of Cross Movement Passes —  One of the founding members of The Cross Movement, Juan James aka Enock, passed on October 17, 2009 from a presumed heart attack. Enock was 35 years old. As one of the original members of The Cross Movement, Enock was featured on the group's first three albums, Heaven's Mentality, House of Representatives, and Human Emergency. He released his first solo effort, AWEthentic in 2003 and recently appeared on The Dash, released earlier this year with The Tonic. 2009 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced —  The International Gospel Music Hall of Fame has announced its inductees for the Class of 2009. This year's inductees include Bishop T.D. Jakes, BeBe Winans, Myrna Summers, Dr. Wyatt T. Walker, Bill "The Mailman" Martin, and Willie Mae Ford-Smith. The induction celebration takes place on October 31, 2009 at the Max M. Lecrae Launches Altered Minds Tour —  Reach Records recording artist Lecrae is prepping for a fall tour titled Altered Minds. The tour blends the hip-hop and rock genres and features MIKESCHAIR, After Edmund, Tedashii, and Sho Baraka. This tour is the follow up to the successful Don't Waste Your Life summer tour. The Altered Minds tour launches on October 1 in Harrington, DE and will stop through 26 cities including Indianapolis, San Antonio, Cincinnati, and Abiline, before concluding on Nov. 22 in Memphis, TN. New York Restoration Choir to Reunite —  The famed New York Restoration Choir, headed by Pastor Donnie McClurkin has their long awaited reunion recording on October 12, 2009. The recording takes place at The Greater Allen Cathedral of NY, in Jamaica, NY and will feature the Perfecting Faith Church Choir. The event is part of Holy Convocation, hosted by Pastor McClurkin and Perfecting Faith Church, which convenes Oct. 11-18, featuring guest psalmists George Huff, Maurette Brown Clark, Trent Cory, Duawne Starling, and Andrea Mellini. Delores "Sugar" Poindexter Passes —  Longtime gospel radio announcer Delores "Sugar" Poindexter passed on Sept. 15, 2009. The famed announcer was a faithful member of the Gospel Announcers Guild and Gospel Music Workshop of America. In addition, Poindexter sung with Beatrice Brown and Sallie Martin of Chicago. There will be a viewing form Poindexter on Sept. 25, 2009 and a memorial musical all taking place at Universal Ministries Worldwide in Indianapolis, IN. The homegoing service is scheduled for Sept. 26, 2009 at Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis, IN. GMWA chairman Bishop Albert Jamison will be officiating. Marvin Sapp Preps for New Record —  Verity Gospel Music Group recording artist Pastor Marvin Sapp is set to record his next album. The live CD/DVD recording is slated to take place on October 16, 2009 at Resurrection Life Church in Wyoming, Michigan. The recording caps off a week long celebration of twenty years of ministry for Sapp. The week's events will feature Pastor Smokie Norful, Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Bishop Joseph Walker, and Bishop Liston Page as guest speakers. Keith Pringle To Make His Industry Return —  Legendary recording artist Keith Pringle makes his long-awaited industry return with a new live recording on Sept. 26, 2009 at Fellowship Dallas Church, in Dallas, Texas. Pringle, who got his start working with Rev. James Cleveland, made his mark in the '80s and '90s with such hits as "No Ways Tired", "Call Him Up", "No Greater Love", and "Perfect Peace". Congressional Black Caucus Honors Dr. Henry Panion —  Renowned conductor Dr. Henry Panion will be honored by the Congressional Black Caucus on Sept. 25, 2009 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. The University of Alabama at Birmingham professor will receive the Civic and Cultural Advancement Award and will be honored along with CBC chair Rep. Barbara Lee and Morehouse College president Robert Franklin, J.D.. Panion is the creative force behind the 2006 chart-topping Gospel Goes Classical effort, which featured Juanita Bynum and Jonathan Butler. The classical conductor has also worked with The Winans, Aretha Franklin, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Chaka Khan, Carrie Underwood, and Ruben Studdard. (Sept. 9, 2009)

VaShawn Mitchell To Record Live Session —  Stellar-award nominee and Tyscot recording artist VaShawn Mitchell is preparing for his next recording session. The live CD/DVD set, titled Triumphant, is scheduled to take place on August 8, 2009 at Higher Living Christian Church, where Mitchell serves as Minister of Worship. This is Mitchell's fourth project, but his first to be recorded in his new home of Atlanta. Special guests for the event include Lowell Pye, Lisa Page Brooks, and Lecresia Campbell. Mitchell's latest release Promises garnered him a 2009 Stellar nomination for Contemporary Group/Duo of the Year and produced the radio hits "For My Good" and "My Testimony". Central South and Lataillade Entertainment Announce Historic Merger —  Central South Distribution, Inc., the decade's leading independent faith based record distributor, has formed a partnership with Lataillade Entertainment, headed by Vicki Mack-Lataillade, and her husband, Claude Lataillade, and Ruff Town Entertainment Group, founded by GRAMMY nominated and noted songwriter Rene Moore. The multi-million dollar stock purchase marks the first time in history that three African-Americans will have a principal stake and partnership in a major contemporary music distribution company. Mack-Lataillade, Lataillade, and Moore, will serve on Central South’s Board of Directors along with Randy Davidson, founder and CEO of Central South , Chuck Adams, co-founder and President of Central South, and Greg Davidson, the company’s Vice-President of Finance.

Over the past decade Central South built a chain of 90 retail stores that grossed $100 million in volume, and has successfully crossed over its nearly 80% urban contemporary gospel and faith based music into major retail chains like Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy. The Lataillades are credited with birthing the most successful independent gospel label ever, GospoCentric Records, which along with several other companies has generated over $100 million dollars. Son of Godfather of Gospel Becomes Pastor —  David Wright, son of the late Elder Timothy Wright and Evangelist Betty Wright has been installed as the new Pastor of Grace Tabernacle Christian Church in Brooklyn, NY. The 30-year old son takes the reins of the church founded by his parents over two decades ago. Pastor David Wright fills the pastoral void caused by the passing of his father, who passed on April 24 after being critically injured in a car accident on July 4, 2008. (July 14, 2009)  



Gospel Musical Filming in Los Angeles —  Recording has begun for the gospel musical Church in Los Angeles. Church is a musical-comedy-drama based on typical Sunday services at the fictional "Glorious New Life Greater Emmanuel Faith Tabernacle Church of The Living God In Christ Up on the Hill." The movie stars singer-actor Terrell Carter, (a regular in Tyler Perry productions). Other cast members include: Blanche McAllister Dykes, Terrence Cotton, Joseph C. Phillips, and Sam Sarpong. Filming begins the first week of August in the Santa Monica and Los Angeles area. The movie is directed and produced by Cory King and Foster Corder. (July 3, 2009)

Sheri Jones-Moffett Signs With EMI Gospel —  Sheri Jones-Moffett of the group Ted & Sheri has signed with EMI Gospel. How Sweet The Sound Winners to Record —  Janet Sutton and the Voices of ACME, the 2008 winners of the How Sweet The Sound choir competition, is gearing up for their first live recording. The Chicago-based aggregation will record on July 18, 2009 at the Apostolic Church of Morgan Park in Chicago, IL. EMI Gospel Announces Deal With Karew Records —  EMI Gospel has entered into a long-term distribution deal with Karew Records, the new imprint of legendary recording artist Karen Clark-Sheard. Karew Records creates the opportunity for Sheard and her sisters The Clark Sisters to own their masters and gain greater creative control over their future careers. Sheard serves as President of the label and has named Darrell Thompson as General Manager, Cynthia Ellis as VP of Marketing & Promotions, and J. Drew Sheard II as A&R. Sheard's next solo effort will be the first project released on the label later this year. In addition, the label will release a new Christmas effort titled Clark Family Christmas due in October and a new Clark Sisters release in early 2010. (June 8, 2009)  



Clarence Fountain Leaves Blind Boys —  Clarence Fountain, longtime front man of the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama is stepping out and forming his own group. Citing creative differences, Fountain, along with former Blind Boys guitarist Sam Butler have formed the group Clarence Fountain, Sam Butler & The Boys. The new group will release their debut album titled Stepping Up & Stepping Out on August 25, 2009. The album will release on the One World Entertainment label in partnership with Tyscot Records. Fountain, a five-time GRAMMY winner, will turn 80 years old in November. (June 8, 2009)  



Radio & Records Closes Its Doors —  The industry's leading voice for radio tracking and the like has closed its doors. Citing the industry's current state of affairs, The Nielsen Company has ceased all services, products, and events related to Radio & Records. The June 5 issue date will be the final publication for the organization. For 36 years, Radio & Records served as the industry's leader for radio tracking and charts, providing vital charting and tracking information for all genres and formats. (June 4, 2009)  



Myron Butler Prepares For Live Set —  Multiple Stellar award winning group Myron Butler & Levi is prepping to record their next effort. The session is set for June 13, 2009 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas. This marks the third album and the first live recording for the popular group. The group's most recent release, Stronger, garnered three 2009 Stellar award nominations including a nod for "Song of the Year" for the album's title cut. (May 23, 2009)  



Dorinda Clark-Cole Serves Up Soul —  Multiple GRAMMY and Stellar award winner Dorinda Clark-Cole delves into the world of radio, this time as host of her own show. The two to four hour weekly syndicated show, titled Serving Up Soul features health and lifestyle features, comedy, financial tips, motivational encouragement, and interviews with artists and celebrities. The show will also feature chart-topping hits and gospel classics. Clark-Cole joins cohorts Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, and Hezekiah Walker as a growing line of artists moving into the world of radio. (May 20, 2009)  



Bass Guitarist Wayman Tisdale Passes —  Bass guitarist and NBA veteran Wayman Tisdale passed on May 15, 2009 after a two-year battle with bone cancer. He was 44. Tisdale was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma, spent 12 seasons in the NBA, and was part of the gold medal winning 1984 US Olympic basketball team. In April 2009, Tisdale was selected for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Following his basketball career, Tisdale released eight albums which featured collaborations with artists such as Marvin Sapp, Out of Eden, and Lalah Hathaway among others. Former Roberta Martin Singers member Eugene Smith Passes —  (Harold) Eugene Smith, one of the original Roberta Martin Singers, passed away on May 9th, 2009 in Chicago, at the age of 88. Smith joined the Roberta Martin Singers (then known as the Martin and Fry Singers) in 1933, and in 1949, began managing the famous group. Known for his "R&B" vocal stylings, he wrote songs such as "I Know the Lord Will Make a Way". Smith actively participated in reunion concerts up to the 1990s. He was the last surviving original member of the Roberta Martin Singers. GOSPELflava.com joins with family and friends in mourning the passing of this Gospel legend. Rev. Timothy Wright Passes —  Gospel great and Godfather of Gospel, Rev. Timothy Wright passed away at the age of 61, on April 23, 2009 at the Bronx Veterans Hospital. . The Grammy-nominated Wright fought a courageous battle back to health from critical injuries he sustained in a car accident in July 2008, that killed his wife, Betty, 58, and grandson, D.J., 14. Wright was the pastor of the Grace Tabernacle Christian Center Church of God in Christ, in Brooklyn, NY and the musical mind behind many, now classic gospel choir tunes like, "I'm So Glad (Trouble Don't Last Always), "Yes, I'm A Believer", "Come Though Almighty King", "For The Rest Of My Life" and most recently "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus". Wright's most recent album (Jesus, Jesus, Jesus) earned him two Stellar award nominations in 2009, including Song of the Year for the title track, which he co-wrote with his late wife. Though his musical contributions were many, Rev. Wright will perhaps be more greatly be remembered as one who touched the lives of many, to win souls for Christ. Shirley Caesar Recognized by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame —  Gospel legend and icon Pastor Shirley Caesar was recently named "Rock My Soul" honoree by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The recognition took place as part of the Hall of Fame's Induction Week in Cleveland, Ohio. The event was celebrated by the "Rock My Soul" concert, featuring J. Moss, Richard Smallwood & Vision, and a special performance from Caesar. This year marked the inaugural "Rock My Soul" event, designed to honor rock and roll's gospel roots while celebrating the incredible legacy of Cleveland churches. (April 21, 2009)  



Isaac Carree In The Studio —  Men of Standard co-founder Isaac Carree is in the lab brewing up his long awaited solo effort. The alumnus of John P. Kee and New Life, has amassed a an all-star production team to handle this project, including Rodney Jerkins, P.J. Morton, Warryn Campbell, and Eric Dawkins. According to Carree, Men of Standard is still intact and is taking a break to pursue other ventures. Meanwhile, Carree is keeping busy traveling with Kirk Franklin and making his foray into television serving as backstage correspondent for the second season of BET's Sunday Best. Hezekiah Walker Expands Ministry To Atlanta —  Within weeks of his consecration as a bishop, Hezekiah Walker is blazing a new path as he opens a new faith community and church in the city of Atlanta, GA. The opening of a church on the campus of Morehouse College returns Walker to the place where he recorded one of his most popular CD projects 15 years ago, Live In Atlanta At Morehouse College. Services were held at the Martin Luther King Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College on Easter Sunday evening. Bishop Walker who pastors in New York and Philadelphia adds Atlanta to his list of venues for his church. Joining Walker for the Easter service were Donald Lawrence & Company, James Fortune & FIYA, Kierra Sheard, and VaShawn Mitchell. (April 15, 2009)  



Karen Clark-Sheard Starts New Label —  Stellar-award winning vocal icon Karen Clark-Sheard is ready to return with a new album. The new album is due in stores this summer on Clark-Sheard's new imprint Karew Records. Currently, the Clark sister can be found with her sister Dorinda Clark-Cole on Mary Mary's The Sound as well as a duet with Donnie McClurkin on "Wait On The Lord", from the chart-topping album We All Are One: Live In Detroit. David "Pop" Winans Passes —  David "Pop" Winans, Sr, famed patriarch of the musical Winans dynasty, passed on April 8, 2009, in Nashville, TN. Winans suffered an initial heart attack and subsequent strokes in the fall of 2008. He was 74 years old. Winans, along with wife Delores Winans formed the group Mom & Pop Winans and released two albums collectively with their 1989 self-titled album garnering a GRAMMY nomination. In 1999, Winans released his solo effort titled Uncensored, garnering yet another GRAMMY nomination. Arguably, Winans' greatest contribution to this industry was his family that produced ten children and the musical presentations of BeBe & CeCe Winans, The Winans,Angie & Debbie, Daniel Winans, and Michael Winans to name a few. Winans' most recent recorded effort can be found on BeBe Winans' 2006 release titled Cherch. In recent years, Winans and wife, Delores, have been regulars at Benny Hinn crusades as well as TBN's Praise The Lord program. There will be a memorial service and viewing for Winans on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 7pm. The Homegoing Celebration will take place on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 10am. Both services will take place at Perfecting Church in Detroit, MI, where Winans' son Marvin Winans is pastor. Ken Cook Passes —  Ken Cook, manager of national promotions for EMI Gospel and well-known gospel music executive, passed on March 16, 2009 after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 37 years old. Prior to his work with EMI Gospel, Cook worked in the gospel radio promotions department for Malaco Records and Sony Music. In these roles, Cook's infectious passion resulted in national airplay for songs such as “Heaven” from Mary Mary and “Victory” from Tye Tribbett & G.A.. During his time with EMI Gospel, Cook promoted artists including Myron Butler, Kierra Sheard, West Angeles COGIC Mass Choir, & Jason Champion. In July 2008, Cook was nominated as Label Promotion Executive Of The Year in gospel by Radio & Records Industry Achievement Awards. Shirley Joiner Passes —  Shirley Joiner, the last living member of BCS and co-founder of the Southeast Inspirational Choir, passed to glory on March 16th, 2009. Joiner, an adept musician , singer/songwriter and choir master first came to prominence as a member of the innovative gospel trio BCS (consisting also of Brenda Waters and Carl Preacher). Together, BCS recorded a string of avant garde albums for the Savoy record label in addition to providing background vocals for Sara Jordan Powell (Carl Preacher was Sara's accompanist) . Their love for choir music and young people led to the formation of the Southeast Inspirational Choir. After Brenda's departure to pursue other musical interests, SEIC continued with Carl and Shirley at the helm. The choir's early albums (recorded for Savoy) were mildly received; it wasn't until the recording of their 10th year anniversary concert for the Jewel label that SEIC would cement their place in gospel music history. Among the standout songs from this album was an arrangement of the hymn "I Am Thine Oh Lord" and the smash hit "My Liberty" which introduced the world to Yolanda Adams. The choir later recorded for the Sweet Rain record label. Shirley Joiner was a charter member of the Houston chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, served as the executive director of the Preparing Holy Disciples Convention (an youth outreach of SEIC) and continued traveling across the country conducting music workshops and presenting concerts. Bishop Eric McDaniel to Record Solo Effort —  Singer and songwriter Bishop Eric McDaniel is set to record his first solo effort titled I Am Favor. McDaniel has penned songs for many artists Hezekiah Walker & LFC and Youthful Praise. Most recently, the McDaniel-penned "One More Chance" appeared on the Stellar award winning effort from Ricky Dillard & New G titled Live in Toronto: The 7th Episode. The live recording takes place on April 5, 2009 at Allen Memorial Church of God in Christ in Mount Vernon, NY. Kim Burrell will make a guest appearance at the recording. McDaniel also serves as pastor of The Lord's Church in Brooklyn, NY. (Mar 5, 2009)  



Dove Award Nominees Announced —  The Gospel Music world is preparing for the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards. This year's awards will take place at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN and will be aired live on April 23, 2009 on the Gospel Music Channel. Mary Mary leads the pack with four nominations including a nod for Group of the Year. Other multiple nominees include Kirk Franklin, Deitrick Haddon, Damita Haddon, Jonathan Nelson, and Marvin Sapp, all with two nominations. Sapp is nominated for Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, while Nelson is up for New Artist of the Year honors. For the first time ever, fans will be able to cast votes for the Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year categories at the Dove Awards website. Voting began on February 26 and will continue through April 23, 2009. (Feb 28, 2009)  



Wilmington Chester Mass Choir Ready to Record —  The Stellar award winning aggregation the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir is ready to enter their tenth recording session on Mar. 28, 2009. The live recording will emanate from the Antioch Baptist Church in Camden, NJ. Joining the choir for this effort will be Maurette Brown Clark, Stephen Hurd, and Lecresia Campbell. The choir's 2007 release It's Not Over garnered two Stellar award nominations while the choir was inducted into the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2008. (Feb 20, 2009)  



James Hall Readies for New Recording —  James Hall & Worship and Praise are gearing up for their next live recording, which will take place on April 4, 2009 at Global Kingdom Ministries in Toronto, Canada. The Brooklyn, NY based aggregation are no strangers to Canada, as their second effort titled King of Glory was recorded in Montreal. This effort is the choir's follow up to their latest release titled Live At Foxwoods and will be the choir's eighth album. (Feb 6, 2009)

Chicago Gospel Legend Ethel Holloway Passes —  Legendary Chicago gospel vocalist Ethel Holloway passed away on January 27, 2009. A long-time member of the famed Jessy Dixon Singers, Holloway came into her own as a lead singer recording with Reverend Milton Brunson's Thompson Community Singers. During the 1980s, she had a string of chart toppers with The Tommies, including "He'll Make it Alright", "He's Keeping Me" and "If You Just Trust Him (He'll Bring You Out)". She recorded her hit, "I'm Yours Lord" with Rev. Clay Evans and the Fellowship Baptist Church Choir, which led to her solo project, I Love The Lord, on Jhun Moon's I AM record label. The wake will take place in Chicago at New Home Missionary Baptist Church on January 30. The homegoing service and city-wide musical tribute will take place on January 31 at Mount Carmel Holiness Church also in Chicago. Claude Jeter Passes —  Claude Jeter, founder of The Swan Silvertones, passed away on January 6th, 2009, in the Bronx, at the age of 94. Born in 1914 in Birmingham, Alabama, Jeter reigned as on of Gospel's stars in the 1940s through to the 1960s, his distinctive falsetto fronting the Four Harmony Kings, who later were renamed The Swan Silvertones on their move from Kentucky to Nashville in 1942, releasing music on the King Records, Speciality Records and Vee-Jay Records labels. In later years, Jeter moved to a solo career (Shanachie Records in the early 1990s), after becoming a pastor in Harlem, NY in the late 1960s. He influenced artists such as Al Green, Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield and Eddie Kendricks, along with a host of Gospel artists of the time. Jeter's improvised lyric on the 1959 hit "Oh Mary, Don't You Weep" was the inspiration for Paul Simon's hit, "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Simon later brought in Jeter to sing on his own projects. Tommy Ellison Passes —  Tommy Ellison, lead vocalist of Tommy Ellison & The Singing Stars passed away on Saturday January 3, 2009, after an illness. Born in Salley, SC, Ellison began by singing background for Madame Edna Gallmon Cooke, as a part of her group, The Five Singing Stars. In 1959, Ellison formed his own group, The Five Singing Stars, later renamed to Tommy Ellison and the Five Singing Stars. The group gained a national reputation in the early 1970s on the Nashboro label, and then moved to the HOB and AIR Gospel labels. He continued singing and ministering until recently. Mississippi Mass Choir Lead Vocalist Passes —  Rogina Thomas, lead singer of the Mississippi Mass Choir passed on December 27, 2008. The vocalist was featured on the singles "He Can Fix What is Broke", "He's Coming Back", "By Grace," "You Brought Me," and "Wise Men Still Seek Him." The funeral services for Thomas will take place on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Greater Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, MS at 11am. Olivia McClurkin Passes —  After a nine-year battle with cancer, Olivia McClurkin (sister of Donnie McClurkin, and member of the Zomba Gospel's artist, The McClurkin Project) went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 4th, 2008. She leaves behind a grandmother, mother, father, two brothers, fours sisters, three daughters and nine grandchildren. Passing of Mark Christian Tilles—  Gospelflava.com mourns the passing on to Glory on June 22, 2004 of Mark Christian Tilles, after a bout with cancer.
