During the Civil Rights Era, the lyrics of Gospel music marked times of progress and social change, ushering in a generation of people to a place of higher heights and hope. Through the generations, Gospel music has helped to sustain, inspire and teach. Gospel music has been there, laced through the hymnals that mark our lives. In celebration of Black History Month, we thought it would be good to put the spotlight on several recent projects that aim to bring back some of the very rich Gospel music heritage. Some of these are re-releases, some are original albums. All of them can be considered to be tributes to those who have gone before us and have paved the way to the provide Gospel music with the prominence that it enjoys today. Donald Vails / Walter Hawkins We go back to about a decade ago and show some appreciation to two landmark albums in particular, from two different artists, both of whom were already legends when they recorded them Donald Vails and Walter Hawkins. Kwami, have released an incredibly rich, multi-media package titled In Bright Mansions. Full Review Various Artists Spiritual Revival Album compiler Reginald Dixon has a vision 'to retain the past so that we do not lose the future.' With Spiritual Revival: Back to the Spirit, he has moved ahead with this vision. Full Review Together As One Hymn Choir The project is a joint collaboration by the Southeastern Archives for Vocal & Endangered Music and Crusader Broadcasting Ministry, and features the Together As One Hymn Choir, a large multi-demonimational choir from over twenty churches in the Carolinas. Full Review The Brockington Ensemble Philly’s historic choir, The Brockington Ensemble, has roots that go back to 1963 and significant ties to Rev. James Cleveland and the inaugral Gospel Music Workshop of America back in 1967.
